As you delve deeper into Folio’s features, you’ll find yourself needing to publish more multimedia content.
One of the most attractive formats that plays a very prominent role in the web world when it comes to creating visual content is video.
Videos will surely become essential elements to make your presentations, projects and designs more visible.
There are several ways to use videos for your Folio. Below we detail the three most practical ways.
Upload and create videos with Kaltura
The first option we encourage you to try is by using a small open source extension that is integrated into Folio and is a tool developed by the UOC called Kaltura.
When you need to create your posts or pages, you will find Kaltura —a video camera icon—, which will allow you to upload and record a video in a very accessible and fast way.
To use it, you must follow the instructions below:
1) Once you have logged in and are inside Folio, when you create a new post or a new page, you will see one of the icons that represents a video camera. Click on it to start recording or to upload a video or audio.
2) Kaltura allows you to upload videos, create them using your webcam and even upload audio or images. Therefore, once you are inside the application, you can choose the option that best suits you.
From now on, we will guide you through recording a video:
3) Among the options available to you, you must choose the option “Webcam”. You will see that a screen will appear that will allow you to record from your webcam. You can stop recording when you are done, you can also view it in the “Video Recorded” section. Once you are sure that everything is correct, confirm and accept the publication conditions and then you can click on “Upload video”.
4) Now, you can go to the continuous screen by clicking on the “Next” option. There you can create the content for your post/page and you will see that Folio has already integrated the recorded video using code. From here, finish generating the content as usual: writing text, choosing permissions and classrooms, etc. Finally, you can click on the “Update” option so that your post or page is published on Folio and in the Agora of the subject.
As you can see, there are significant differences between the different options when it comes to creating and using videos in Folio.
Embedding videos:
Another way to upload videos is by embedding links from platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. This will allow users to view the video you’ve already posted. Folio then links the URLs of the video platforms and embeds them so that the video can be viewed immediately.
You can even post links from Drive or any other app that allows you to get a link, but you should keep in mind that the appearance will not be the same as if you do it from one of the two platforms we have mentioned.
In short, if you prefer not to upload your videos to your own web space in order to save storage space and power, you can upload your videos to a platform such as YouTube or Vimeo.
As always, the steps to embed are very easy. We give you the necessary guidelines to be able to complete this action:
1) In this case, you will be able to embed videos for the content of your pages and posts. Therefore, once you are in “My Folio” you must choose whether you want to make a post or create a page.
2) Next, you can click on the “Add media” option. After that, press the “Insert from a URL” button that you will find on the left side.
3) Now, write the link in the corresponding box and, if you wish, you can add the text that will accompany the video you want to insert. It can be the link to a platform or a mobile application.
4) The next steps are the usual ones when creating content. Write the text you want, choose the viewing permissions and choose the Agora of the subject. In this case, you will see that the media file, that is, the video, has been inserted into the content space. If necessary, you can move it to any other position or exchange it with other elements, that is, like any other content block. Remember that you can use this option in the same way to create posts as to create pages. Therefore, the button you will have to press will be “Insert into page” or “Insert into post“, depending on the action you have chosen at the beginning.
5) Finally, as always, you must use the “Publish” button so that it can be viewed in Folio and in the Agora of the subject you have previously chosen.
Media Library
From the Media Library, Folio will allow you to insert videos that you have already recorded or stored on your computers or mobile devices, and will let you deposit them on the WordPress server itself.
The files you upload will be stored in your Folio Media Library, and from there you will be able to access the media files whenever you need them, whether they are videos, audios or images, and be able to use them again.
How to upload a video?
To upload a video that you have previously recorded, you must follow these simple steps that we indicate:
1) To create a post with an image you have to create a new post in the same way you would do with a post with text.
Click on “Posts” and “Add New Post” in your Folio menu.
Click on “Add Media.”
2) Next, you can choose to “drop files to upload” you want to upload or you can select the file from your computer or mobile device.
3) The selected video is added to the “Media Library” and stored with the rest of the media files you have so that you can use them whenever you want.
4) It is important to remember that the maximum size allowed for your videos and images is 300 MB and that Folio accepts the insertion of the following formats:
Video formats supported in Folio |
.MP4 |
.M4V (o MPEG-4) |
.MOV (de QuickTime) |
.WMV (de Windows Media Vídeo) |
.AVI |
.MPG |
.OGV (Ogg) |
.3GP (3GPP) |
.3G2 (3GPP2) |
5) Finally, you should keep in mind that one of the drawbacks of this system is that it does not encrypt the files, therefore, it can load the servers unnecessarily.
